Transitioning to GA4: Audit checklist

As you probably know, Google Analytics: Universal Analytics (GA UA) is saying goodbye in the middle of 2023 to switch to GA4.

We were actively auditing many GA accounts in the past, so it’s crucial for us to make a smooth transition to a new version.

The first step is this new GA audit checklist. We’ve been doing similar ones with the UA for our new clients, because it’s a simple way of finding out what’s missing in their Analytics, and this checklist usually gave all answers within a couple of hours.

You can use this Google Doc Audit Checklist to either check up your own GA4 yourselves or think about using it for some of your clients.

Most important things that’ve changed in GA4:

  • 'View' section is going away - structure is simpler and easier to implement

  • The ability to create many types of custom reports tailored to our needs, which was severely limited in UA.

  • DV360 & GBQ linking - great advantages

  • Ability to combine data from the web and the app in one place

If you want to extend the audit process with extra elements:

  • Server-side tracking - this function was not available when the audit was first created

  • Google Consent Mode implementation and compliance with the cookie policy

  • A section about specific reports that are missing in GA4 but were present in UA
